Solanum melongena
(85 days) Open pollinated.

Squat teardrop-shaped shiny deep purple fruits are perfect for making a dish of the same name: eggplant stuffed with walnuts, garlic and peppers, then cured in olive oil. The eggplants should be picked small for this dish—they get stuffed whole into jars—but fruits can grow to 6–7".

A member of the Iraqi Seed Collective brought this variety back from a visit to Iraq. A farmer friend in WA grew it out last season as a market crop—he loved these productive tasty eggplants, which customers found made good baba ghanoush.

Our seed crop was grown in Massachusetts, where the plants performed equally as well as in WA. This eggplant is gorgeous, and it fills a culinary niche that makes its preservation all the more important. We are so pleased to partner with Iraqi Seed Collective and offer this variety in our catalog.
