Abies koreana

15-30' x 6 -12', but tends to stay on the smaller side in our climate. Entertainingly cute 3" upright purple-blue cones perch atop bright green bows in mid-July, even on small young trees. Needles are distributed around the stem like a bottlebrush and have distinct frosty-silver undersides. Renowned plantsman Liberty Hyde Bailey called it “hardy and attractive.” We agree!

Favored by some Christmas tree farms in Michigan for its fast rate of growth. Ours have been a bit more slow-growing, a few inches a year until well established. Conical to pyramidal form; use as a specimen tree or for a hedge screen. Native to the temperate rainforests of the southern end of the Korean peninsula and on Jeju Island, just south of the mainland; brought to in U.S. in 1917 by EH Wilson and the Arnold Arboretum.

Prefers full to partial sun, rich well-drained moderately acid soil. Intolerant of clay and urban pollution. Might languish in hotter regions—Zone 5 is the sweet spot.
