‘Major Wheeler’ Trumpet Honeysuckle

×
bare-root plants
Lonicera sempervirens

6–10' long. Scarlet-red and yellow flowers. This is the straight species.

Selected for excellent blossom set and outstanding resistance to powdery mildew. Found by amateur horticulturist Patricia Wheeler along the North Carolina coast in the late 1980s and named for her husband Charles, whose many activities included rescuing rare wildflowers and supporting minority health research and education. Years ago, friend and former Fedco grower John Meader introduced us to a similar cultivar called Firecracker. We’re pretty wild about these plants and plan to have more for you in future catalogs. 2015 Pennsylvania Gold Medal Award. Z3. Maine Grown. (well-rooted vines) Limited supply—order early!
