Malus spp.
Red-blushed skin.

Fall. Bittersharp cider apple. Another wild seedling discovery from Eric Shatt, cidermaker at Redbyrd Orchard and former Cornell Research Orchard manager. “Plentiful tannins and acidity,” he reports, and good for fresh eating if you like tart apples with complex flavor. Blended with aromatic dessert fruits and traditional bittersweets in some of Redbyrd’s lovely fermented ciders.

Medium-to-large attractive and irregular fruit has splotches of red blush and broken crimson stripes and spots over a yellow ground color. Apples conveniently drop when ripe, which is great for gathering for the press.

Vigorous trees do well with no spray. Midseason bloom. Z4.

(Semi-dwarf: 2½–5' bare-root trees)
