Roman Stem Apple

scionwood
Malus spp.
This is a twig for grafting. Fall.

Unknown parentage. Found in Burlington, NJ, early 1800s.

Tender yellowish flesh is mild and juicy with a nice aroma. Good for fresh eating and cooking. Small-to-medium irregular roundish fruit is light yellow with a brownish bronze blush, some russet patches, and scattered red dots. The name comes from the Pewaukee-like fleshy lip at the base of the stem that was thought to look like a curved nose from a Roman bust.

We got our scionwood from the original Tower Hill Botanic Garden collection and grafted it in one of our orchards in 2019. This year (2025) marks the third consecutive nice crop. Vigorous, productive and annual bearing. Relatively clean fruit in a no-spray setting. Blooms midseason. Z4.
